So have they count Carl Edwards running through the line at Talladega as the race finished or was it a short ride?

NASCAR site says it was 187 laps, but he also says he was the 24th place and the people behind it actually finished the race, i dont get it?

He finished 24th as he ended up being the last car on the lead lap. The cars that passed him after the wreck also included cars were laps down as Jeff Gordon, etc.
